This quote has bumped around in my head and heart for over a week now:
If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. ~ African proverb
I came upon it the same day I was elected to replace the previous president of The Art Center of Redwood City & San Carlos. She had suddenly resigned four days prior.
This is not a job that was ever on my bucket list, but as an artist at the center with a great desire to see other artists around me supported, it was a job that simply needed doing.
In the days since, many artists have stepped in to offer encouragement and suggestions. Some have dug in and put actions to their words. They are helping with things they are inspired by or have knowledge of.
And, I have let them.
By sharing the load we all get painting time. By sharing the ideas we have more ideas to choose the very best ones from. By sharing the lead, we give comfort to ourselves and others. By sharing information, we are all stronger together.
They help themselves. They help me. I help them. We help ourselves. And, through all of that, maybe we can help our community even more.
It's amazing and humbling at the same time. And, I wonder... just how far WILL we go?
ps. How do you feel about letting go of control and allowing others to add their vision to your experience? Allowing them to help?
